A Two-Metre Chrome Trophy for the World's Biggest Esports Stage

The Esports World Cup championship trophy: designed, SLA 3D printed, hand-finished, and chrome-plated in our Dubai workshop, then delivered to a stage watched by a global audience.

The brief

The Esports World Cup is not a regional tournament. It is the largest competitive gaming event in the world, with a prize pool reported at approximately $70 million, more than 2,000 competitors, and teams representing over 100 countries. The championship trophy for an event at that level has one job: to be the single object every camera in the arena points at during the final moments of the broadcast.

The requirement given to us was uncompromising. A two-metre presentation trophy with a mirror-gold chrome finish, sculptural enough to read as a trophy from the back row of an arena, clean enough to survive extreme close-up on broadcast, and structurally sound enough to be lifted, carried, and photographed on stage without flexing or showing a single visible seam.

The challenge

A chrome mirror finish is the least forgiving surface in fabrication. Matte paint hides a lot; chrome hides nothing. Every layer line, every sanding scratch, every micron of surface waviness is amplified by reflection, and then amplified again by stage lighting and broadcast cameras. A finish that would pass as excellent on a matte sculpture reads as a defect once it is chromed.

The second challenge was scale versus resolution. At two metres, the piece is far larger than any single print envelope, so it had to be engineered as a segmented assembly. But segmentation introduces joints, and joints on a chrome surface are exactly where the eye goes first. The seams had to disappear completely.

The third was the deadline. An event date on this scale does not move. There was no version of this project where the trophy arrives late, and no version where a finishing problem gets absorbed by extra weeks.

The build

  1. Digital engineering. The sculptural form was rebuilt as a production-ready model, then segmented into printable sections with keyed internal registration, so each part could only assemble in one position, at one alignment, with no cumulative drift across two metres.
  2. SLA 3D printing. Sections were printed on stereolithography at 0.2 mm layer precision, chosen over FDM specifically because SLA produces a denser, smoother green surface, which means dramatically less material has to be sanded away before a chrome-ready finish is achievable.
  3. Structural core. An internal load-bearing armature was engineered into the assembly so the trophy carries its own weight through a rigid spine rather than through the printed shell, letting it be lifted and handled on stage without flex.
  4. Seam elimination and hand finishing. Joints were bonded, filled, and then progressively block-sanded and polished through escalating grits by hand. This is the stage that decides whether a chrome piece looks like a trophy or looks like a print, and it is the stage that cannot be rushed or outsourced.
  5. Chrome-gold plating. The finished surface was chrome-plated to a mirror gold, then inspected under raking light and under direct spot lighting, replicating arena conditions, because a surface that passes under workshop fluorescents can still fail under a stage key light.
  6. Delivery. Crated, transported, and handed over event-ready, with the assembly designed so final positioning on site required no tools and no adjustment.

The outcome

The trophy stood on stage at the Esports World Cup, at the centre of a tournament with a prize pool reported around $70 million, over 2,000 competitors, and teams from more than 100 countries. It was lifted, photographed, and broadcast, which is the only real test a presentation piece ever gets.

For us the more useful takeaway is what it proves about the workflow. A two-metre chrome piece with invisible seams, delivered to a fixed international event date, is only possible when the printing, the structural engineering, the hand finishing, and the plating decisions all sit under one roof and one schedule. Every handoff we removed is a week we did not lose and a defect we did not inherit.
